The road to defending their Super Bowl title starts now as the Kansas City Chiefs are set to take on the Detroit Lions on Thursday Night Football to kick off the 2023 season.
The Chiefs are once again the favorites to take home this year’s championship, though they are already running into obstacles before the regular season begins.
Travis Kelce suffered a hyper-extended knee in practice earlier this week and is listed as questionable against the Lions.
Not having Kelce would be a huge blow for the offense, but the defense has its own problem as they’ll be without Chris Jones.
Jones has been away from the team as he seeks a contract extension from Kansas City.
The All-Pro interior defensive lineman has been doing his best to stay in shape and he even revealed that he could suit up against Detroit if he had a contract in place via PJ Green of FOX.
“A deal gets done today, I’m on the field tomorrow,” Jones said.

So far, there have been reports saying that Jones isn’t looking to become the highest-paid defensive player in the league but wants something commensurate with his talent.
When he’s available, Jones is a legitimate game-changer on the defensive end as he can wreak havoc in the backfield either as a pass rusher or a run stuffer.
The Chiefs’ defense is nowhere near the same without their star, but the two sides have yet to reach an agreement on an extension.
Hopefully, Kansas City gets something done sooner rather than later because they could very well struggle without Jones.
