Over the short history of the NBA, only two teams have really stood out among the rest in terms of success and titles won, with the Boston Celtics and Los Angeles Lakers currently tied for 17 banners hanging in the rafters of their respective arenas.

With the top-seeded Celtics on the verge of advancing to the Eastern Conference Finals and looking like the best team in the conference by far, Boston has a legitimate shot of winning an NBA-record 18th title, which would be quite an accomplishment, especially with the team expected to be a contender for many years to come.

The Lakers, however, are trying to put together one last championship run with superstar LeBron James leading the way, but the storied franchise has struggled to find the right pieces to put around James and fellow superstar Anthony Davis.

Clearly, the Celtics have the better chance to reach 18 titles first, which sparked a debate on ESPN’s “First Take,” with Chris Russo giving his two cents on which of these two franchises is the best in the history of the NBA.

“It has to be the Celtics,” Russo said.

Russo thinks that the Minneapolis Lakers, who won five titles before moving to Los Angeles in 1960, shouldn’t count toward the franchise’s total number of titles.

Plus, Russo also believes the head-to-head matchups between these two iconic franchises are telling, with the Celtics leading the way nine to three, which is kind of hard to argue with.

It’ll be interesting to see how things change in the years to come, with the Celtics on the rise and the Lakers potentially heading in the other direction.
