The San Francisco 49ers will play their first preseason game of 2024 when they visit the Tennessee Titans.
While the 49ers’ regulars are not expected to play, as is usually the case in preseason games, practices and joint scrimmages with other teams are very important in terms of getting ready for the games that do count.
Star running back Christian McCaffrey injured his calf days ago and has been sitting out practice as a result, but during an appearance on SiriusXM NFL Radio, he said he feels well enough to play if San Francisco had a regular season game this weekend.
“If we had a game, I would play,” McCaffrey said.

McCaffrey is considered the best running back in the NFL and had a dominant season in 2023, as he led the league in rushing yards, total scrimmage yards and tied for the lead in total touchdowns, earning him the Offensive Player of the Year award.
He also finished third in the balloting for the NFL MVP award behind quarterbacks Dak Prescott and winner Lamar Jackson.
McCaffrey was rewarded for his outstanding 2023 campaign by being chosen as the cover athlete for “Madden NFL 25,” but on the other hand, it has led to concerns that he could suffer the supposed “Madden curse.”
He did say he has been sitting out of practice as a precautionary move, which makes sense, as this isn’t exactly the late stages of the regular season, let alone the playoffs.
If the 49ers finally make good on their “Quest for Six” this season, McCaffrey will be front and center on their journey to winning the franchise’s latest Super Bowl championship.
