The San Francisco 49ers are currently in the middle of a difficult situation with one of their top skill-position players.

As many fans are well aware, Aiyuk and the 49ers have been trying to put together a contract for weeks, but to this point, they haven’t been able to reach an agreement.

Amid these conversations, Aiyuk requested a trade from the team, hoping he’d find a new team that was willing to pay him what he believed he was worth.

For a while, it seemed like Aiyuk was going to stay with the team, understanding they give him a great chance at making it back to the Super Bowl in the next few years.

However, recent reports are starting to indicate otherwise, including a conversation between Christian McCaffrey and some reporters, as shared by Kevin Kruegs and Dov Kleiman.

“As a former teammate… er, you know… A teammate of his in general, any teammate that you have, you love, you respect them, you want the best for them,” McCaffrey said.

While Aiyuk is still a member of the 49ers, McCaffrey seemed to indicate that he could be on the move and that the two of them are no longer teammates, at least in spirit.

Time will tell what the 49ers decide to do.

If they end up moving on from him, he might not have as much Super Bowl-winning upside with a new team, but he will get a chance to be a true WR1 in a new, more target-rich environment.
