The Cleveland Cavaliers parted ways with JB Bickerstaff after a somewhat positive season.
The coach had reportedly outstayed his welcome in the organization, both with the front office and the locker room, so it was time for a change.
That was an issue they needed to tackle head-first, as Donovan Mitchell’s contract extension looms large and they need someone to lead the way.
With that in mind, Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN reports that James Borrego is currently gaining traction as their next coach (via Evan Sidery).
James Borrego is “gaining traction” to become the Cavaliers’ next head coach, per @wojespn (https://t.co/7AAYQw6TT7).
Borrego landing in Cleveland, while JJ Redick secures the Lakers’ gig is the likely result.

Apparently, this will now leave the door wide open for JJ Redick to coach the Los Angeles Lakers, who were also interested in Borrego.
Borrego has plenty of experience as an assistant coach, and he also coached the Charlotte Hornets.
He never made the playoffs as a coach and has a 148-183 coaching record (.447 winning percentage), but the Hornets didn’t exactly have a lot of talent at the time, so we have to take that with a grain of salt.
Mitchell is now expected to sign a contract extension with the Cavs, which is kind of a surprise, as rumors had it that he was going to decline that chance and request a trade.
Whatever the case, it seems like the Cavaliers might have found their new coach.
