Colin Cowherd Notes What Went Wrong With The Giants

After last season’s surprise success, the New York Giants had a good amount of hope and optimism for this season.

They had given quarterback Daniel Jones and star defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence new contracts while ending a highly publicized contract standoff with Saquon Barkley, at least for the moment.

Week 1 pitted them against their division rivals, the Dallas Cowboys, which provided them with a measuring-stick game and the opportunity to make a statement.

Instead, New York got destroyed at home, 40-0.

Jones played poorly, and it seems like Colin Cowherd put a lion’s share of the blame on him.

“Daniel Jones is a highly paid average QB with a really great offensive coach.”

Giants head coach Brian Daboll, as Cowherd noted, has a reputation as a very good offensive mind, but there is an old saying that you cannot get blood out of a turnip.

On Sunday, Jones completed just 15 of his 28 pass attempts and threw two interceptions, which gave him an embarrassing passer rating of 32.4.

Last season, although he only threw for 3,205 yards and 15 touchdowns, he did manage to complete 67.2 of his pass attempts and limit himself to five interceptions in 16 games.

If Jones is ultimately just an average quarterback as Cowherd said, the Giants could reanimate the corpse of legendary San Francisco 49ers head coach Bill Walsh and even he wouldn’t be able to help Jones get to the next level.

Despite the addition of former Pro Bowl tight end Darren Waller, New York once again has a lack of productive receivers, putting too much pressure on Barkley to carry them offensively.

It could very well be a case of the rest of the NFL catching up to what they did last year when they finished 9-7-1 and upset the 13-4 Minnesota Vikings in the Wild Card round of the playoffs.
