After last season’s abysmal first-round playoff loss at home to the 9-8 Green Bay Packers, the writing was on the wall for Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy.

He is now going to be coaching in 2024 on the final year of his contract and will have to produce to keep his job.

Fox Sports’s Colin Cowherd recently chatted about why that home playoff loss against the Packers put McCarthy on the hot seat.

“If McCarthy doesn’t work here, he’ll never be a head coach again…That Green Bay loss wasn’t just a loss…You can’t lose like that at home in the final game of the year,” Cowherd said on The Herd.

McCarthy has guided Dallas to three consecutive 12-win seasons, which is something that the previous head coach in Jason Garrett was not able to do.

However, McCarthy has just one playoff win in his four years coaching the team.

That is not good enough, especially when Jerry Jones is your boss.

Losing 48-32 at home to a rebuilding wildcard team in the Packers was not exactly an ideal way to close out the season.

Heading into this year, McCarthy is on the final year of his deal, and star players such as Dak Prescott, CeeDee Lamb, and Micah Parsons are all looking for major extensions.

If the Cowboys, who haven’t necessarily made themselves better on paper this offseason, fail to make anything short of the NFC Championship Game, Jerry Jones may decide to move on from not just the head coach but some key players too.

All the pressure is on the former Super Bowl-winning head coach right now.
