New York Giants star running back Saquon Barkley isn’t having a great week, with the 26-year-old falling short in contract negotiations with the storied franchise resulting in him having to play under a franchise tag this season, which will pay him just over $10 million.

Barkley was hoping to come to terms on a lucrative long-term deal with the Giants ahead of the NFL’s deadline for franchise-tagged players to do so earlier this week, and things didn’t go as planned for arguably one of the best backs in the league.

Although Barkley admittedly wants to play next season, he is the type of player that will sit out an entire season in order to prove a point, and the Giants star is still contemplating doing so, as he believes it might be something that needs to be done.

Colin Cowherd thinks it is a bad idea for Barkley to sit out the 2023 NFL season, as running backs like him who are in an elite class are having things working against them, and there’s no need to add to the pile.

“You’ve got things working against you as a RB — analytics, data, health. You do not want to add another thing, you pouting.”

At this point, it seems as though star running backs across the league should come to the conclusion that the days of elite backs getting paid a ton of money over the course of long-term deals are over.

Although it’s a hard pill to swallow for players at the position, the NFL and its teams are making it a reality, and players sitting out may do nothing but lose money and become another year older, making matters worse a year from now.
