It was a handful of years ago that quarterback Colin Kaepernick led the San Francisco 49ers to Super Bowl XLVII and got them to the brink of winning the Vince Lombardi Trophy.

He hasn’t played in the NFL since the 2016 season, but since then, he has periodically looked to make a comeback.

The 36-year-old said that he’s hoping one NFL team owner will “open up” and invite him back onto the field and that he feels he can lead a team to a championship, per Sky Sports NFL.

“We’ve just got to get one of these team owners to open up”

Kaepernick was never an elite quarterback, but he was a dual-threat signal-caller who was more than capable of playing complementary football for a 49ers team that loved to run the football and won with a savage defense.

He took over the QB1 spot during the 2012 season when incumbent starter Alex Smith suffered a concussion, and with him under center, San Francisco didn’t miss a beat.

In the 2016 preseason, Kaepernick started to take a knee during the playing of the national anthem in order to protest police brutality and systemic racism, which made him a polarizing figure.

Some attacked him, believing he was disrespecting the flag and the nation, but others applauded him for drawing attention to a problem that continues to plague the United States.

Since he hasn’t played in several years, he has much less mileage than most 36-year-old quarterbacks, and thus there is always the chance he’s still capable of playing satisfactory football.
