The Washington Commanders were the last team to make a head coaching hire, but they eventually landed on former Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn.

Quinn was the architect of one of the best defensive units in the league in Dallas and now brings his expertise and knowledge to Washington where he should have a large say on the roster.

The Commanders have sorely lacked a leader and motivator like Quinn and he should be able to step in and change the culture from Day 1.

Washington sold some of its defensive pieces at the trade deadline during the 2023 NFL season, but the team is armed with draft picks to supplement the roster.

Quinn may be stepping into a rebuilding situation, but he should be able to establish a clear team identity and style of play.

Franchise legend and current senior advisor Doug Williams had glowing remarks for Quinn, via Jake Russell of The Washington Post.

“But I feel good about Dan Quinn, let me say that,” Williams said. “Because anybody who works here the next few years or so with Dan Quinn, anybody who played for Dan Quinn, I think they all would leave here saying the same thing, that the choice we made is the best choice.”

Super Bowl XXII MVP and current Commanders senior advisor Doug Williams to Doc Walker this morning on 106.7 The Fan: “We had the last regime that said that he changed the culture. Doc, you and I both know, I don’t feel no culture change.” https://t.co/B5A4qmHLJF pic.twitter.com/K12oONceGx

It’s high praise from Williams, especially considering the new head coach has yet to make his imprint on the team.

However, it speaks to the character of Quinn, who is widely respected across the league.

It might take a couple of years before Washington is competitive again, but Quinn seems like a strong bet to turn things around.
