The Washington Commanders have seemingly found their new starting quarterback for the foreseeable future.
After several years of frustration and inconsistency from the position, the Commanders used the No. 2 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft on Jayden Daniels.
Daniels was one of the top prospects in this year’s draft class, and as the reigning Heisman Trophy winner, he presents significant upside for this team.
While there is a lot of excitement surrounding Daniels, there was one thing hanging over his head moving into the 2024 season.
His college number, No. 5, was taken by one of his new teammates.
Fans were curious to see how this situation would play out, and what number Daniels would choose, should his teammate keep his number.
Despite wearing No. 5 for several years for the Commanders, as he revealed in a video shared by the team on Twitter, Tress Way has decided to relinquish his number to Daniels.

Way later indicated that he doesn’t want any money or material possessions to give up his number.
Instead, he just wants Daniels to send his family to an LSU-Oklahoma game in the future, something that shouldn’t be a problem for Daniels, given his new financial status as a top-three pick in the draft.
This seems to be a win-win for all parties.
Daniels gets to start his NFL career on the right foot, getting a number that he’s worn for a long time.
Way also gets an opportunity to go to a great college game in the future, and he has also made an instant connection with his new teammate.
