Cowboys Have Made A Decision About Backup QB

The Dallas Cowboys will have Dak Prescott behind center for another season at the very least.

Whether they’re willing and/or able to retain him beyond this year remains to be seen.

If that’s not the case, it seems like they will have to shop somewhere else for their quarterback of the future, as he’s clearly not currently on their roster.

According to a report by NFL insider Ari Meirov, the Cowboys have announced that Cooper Rush will be Prescott’s backup, meaning that, once again, Trey Lance will enter the season as QB3.

The former San Francisco 49ers first-round pick showed glimpses of great dual-threat play in the preseason, but his lack of development has been worrisome and evident.

Even when he played well, he threw five interceptions in a single game, and he was playing against backups.

Lance is still young and clearly has the physical tools and potential to be a good NFL player.

But if he hasn’t figured things out by now, maybe he never will.

Jerry Jones traded for him without even consulting HC Mike McCarthy, and Lance failed to convince his coach that he could, at the very least, be of service as a backup.

That puts the Cowboys in a tough spot.

If they thought Lance could be ready, they might feel better parting ways with Prescott.

Now, they might have no choice but to overpay to keep him around.
