Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin has become an inspirational story across the football world over the past 20 months.

In January 2023, he took a hit while making a tackle and ended up going into cardiac arrest, which resulted in a marquee game between the Bills and Cincinnati Bengals being stopped.

It was feared that Hamlin might die, or suffer irreversible damage, but he made a miraculous recovery and was back on the field in Week 4 of last season.

While Hamlin is still going strong for Buffalo, he sat out a recent practice as a precaution because of “something minor,” and Alaina Getzenberg of ESPN noted that the upper portion of his left leg was wrapped.

Damar Hamlin said the reasoning behind this was “something minor” and that coaches were just being careful with it considering the season is a couple of weeks away. https://t.co/i4H9eFybBI

Hamlin, a sixth-round draft pick in 2021, had a very quiet rookie season, but he started to emerge in 2022.

That year, he started 13 of the 15 games he appeared in and posted 91 total tackles (63 solo), six tackles for loss, three quarterback hits, two passes defended and 1.5 sacks.

When he suffered his cardiac arrest episode, players on both teams were so distraught they decided they couldn’t continue playing that night given the situation.

It was because of the quick treatment given by first responders that Hamlin was able to make such an incredible recovery.

Hamlin spent a little more than a week in the hospital and about three months later was cleared to continue playing football.

He later received the 2023 George Halas Award, an honor given by the Pro Football Writers of America to the NFL player, coach or staff member who overcame the most adversity to succeed.
