When injuries pile up in the NFL, sometimes teams need to take a step back and give their players a break.

This is exactly the case with head coach Dan Campbell and the Detroit Lions.

According to insider Kyle Meinke, the team canceled its plans for a scrimmage in favor of a regular practice, which will also occur without pads.

Star running back Jahmyr Gibbs (hamstring) and rookie cornerbacks Terrion Arnold (upper body) and Ennis Rakestraw Jr. (ankle) are the big names dealing with injury woes.

Due to the injury bug, the Lions have canceled today’s scrimmage and will hold a regular practice instead. Sounds like no pads

This is a wise call coming from Campbell.

After all, the regular season opener for the Lions is less than four weeks away, and injuries always have the potential to rear their ugly head at any point in the NFL.

It also isn’t as if Campbell is canceling practice altogether.

He is giving his key players time to rest and not pushing them because he realizes that this is a good opportunity to take a step back.

This Lions team has big aspirations this season after winning 12 games and coming to within a fourth quarter of making the Super Bowl for the first time in franchise history.

As the league has seen over the years with the San Francisco 49ers in 2020 and the Cincinnati Bengals last season, significant injuries can derail a season at any moment.

Despite only entering his fourth season as a head coach in the league, Dan Campbell is showing his smarts by playing the long game and putting his players’ health first.
