Ever since it was announced that he wouldn’t take the head coaching job with the Los Angeles Lakers, everyone has been wondering why Dan Hurley is remaining with UConn.
Is it because of loyalty to the team, or the complicated situation the Lakers are in?
Speaking on “The Dan Le Batard Show,” Hurley suggested that money was a deciding factor in his choice to stay with UConn.
“To say that [money is] not a motivating factor—the finances—to leave a place, it’s definitely a thing,” Hurley said.
NBA analyst Trevor Lane retweeted a video of Hurley’s statement, adding, “Ouch. Hurley says there is a number that would have changed his decision to spurn the Lakers.”

According to reports, the Lakers were putting a six-year, $70 million contract on the table for Hurley.
That would have immediately made him one of the highest-paid coaches in the league, which would have been quite an honor.
With that being said, it wasn’t enough for him and his family, but not just because of the amount.
Hurley has a long history with UConn and that part of the country.
His family and friends live there and it would be very hard for him to uproot everything and head across the country into a high-tension job like head coach of the Lakers.
Perhaps if Jeanie Buss and LA’s front office offered Hurley more, he would have considered the job.
But in the end, the deal just wasn’t enough for him to pack up and move.
Some people were surprised by the deal the Lakers made, thinking they would give Hurley at least $100 million.
They have been criticized for their handling of the Hurley negotiations and now they are without a head coach just weeks before the draft.
