New England Patriots No. 3 overall pick Drake Maye made his preseason debut for the team in last night’s 17-3 win over the Carolina Panthers and played one series early in the game, going 2-for-3 passing for 19 yards.
Former quarterback Dan Orlovsky revealed his thoughts on Maye’s brief debut and had a lot to say despite Maye only throwing three passes.
Orlovsky posted a video on X highlighting the little things he liked from Maye with a focus on some of the areas he needs to improve upon, including taking snaps under center, his mechanics at the top of his drop, and his understanding of what he’s looking at after the snap, and according to Orlovsky, he looked good in all these areas in his debut.

Orlovsky highlighted his good mechanics during a handoff despite not playing under center much at North Carolina and his strong base on a 7-step drop before getting the ball out quickly.
Maye will likely begin the season on the bench learning behind Jacoby Brissett, which isn’t a surprise as he was looked at as a bit of a project coming out of UNC.
Patriots fans have to be excited about what they saw out of Maye even though he only threw three passes and both of his completions were screen passes to his running backs.
New England had the worst offense in football last year and there’s no reason to rush Maye to be the savior.
So far so good, as Maye looks to be as good as advertised.
