Justin Fields made his debut with the Pittsburgh Steelers on Friday night as their starting quarterback in a 20-12 loss to the Houston Texans, and the former Chicago Bear put up solid numbers by going 5-for-6 passing for 67 yards.

It was a solid debut from Fields as he looks to claw his way back to a starting gig, and former QB Dan Orlovsky shared his thoughts on the debut after the game.

In a clip Orlovsky shared on X, he highlighted what he saw from Fields in the game and broke down three different plays, and he pointed out the concern he had with Fields taking snaps under center after fumbling twice, which could have been simply due to a disconnect with his new center.

In another play, Orlovsky highlighted a 3rd and 13 play where none of Fields’ receivers were ready to catch the ball after Fields had already completed his drop, which Orlovsky believes is because he dropped a bit too quickly.

These are both little things that can have a massive impact and can surely be ironed out over time, and both issues often pop up when working with new personnel on a new team.

Both issues could stem from Fields being slightly jittery in the pocket after spending years getting mauled behind the Bears’ offensive line, so he’ll have to learn to be more patient now that he is playing behind a line that is hopefully much improved.

He has an outside shot to win the starter’s job, but even if he sits a year or two behind Russell Wilson, it could be great for Fields’ development long-term.
