With less than two weeks to go before the season opener, the San Francisco 49ers have two major contract situations to sort out before taking on the New York Jets.
Wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk has been demanding an extension for months, and left tackle Trent Williams wants his contract restructured.
The 49ers need both players on the field in order to seriously compete for the Super Bowl championship, but most feel Williams is more important to them than Aiyuk is.
Former NFL quarterback and ESPN analyst Dan Orlovsky is among those who agree with that take.
“I think San Francisco can weather some time without Brandon Aiyuk. … They cannot weather a single moment without Trent Williams,” Orlovksy said, via NFL on ESPN.

Williams is considered by many to be the best left tackle in the NFL, and some consider him one of its five best overall players. He’s been named to the Pro Bowl 11 times and All-Pro First Team in each of the past three years.
Many of San Francisco’s plays, especially their running plays, gravitate to the left side of the field in order to take advantage of his incredible blocking skills.
The rest of the 49ers offensive line, on the other hand, is a legitimate concern, and it was something the Kansas City Chiefs were able to exploit in last season’s Super Bowl.
The Jets have an excellent front seven on defense, and therefore the Niners’ offensive line will need to perform at a high level to make sure the team starts its season with a victory.
