Anytime an NFL team becomes consistently great, it’s natural to start worrying about how long it’s going to last because it will inevitably have to pay a high rate for its good players, and no team can find a way to pay everybody.
The San Francisco 49ers are in this place at the moment and have a well-publicized standoff going with one of their best players, though radio host Dan Patrick believes the team has “a good problem” on its hands.
On a recent episode of “The Dan Patrick Show,” he discussed the Niners’ tough spot with wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk and said he doesn’t think they are going to be able to pay him.
“The 49ers have a good problem,” Patrick said. “They have lots of good players that want to get paid. There’s only so much money to spread around here.”

It’s a valid point, as Aiyuk’s contract situation has been the elephant in the room all offseason given the fact that the 49ers have previously given huge contracts to other skill position players: Deebo Samuel, Christian McCaffrey and George Kittle.
Even unheralded wide receiver Jauan Jennings got a two-year deal for just over $15 million this offseason, while the team also drafted wide receiver Ricky Pearsall in the first round as a possible replacement for Aiyuk, who reportedly has requested a trade.
The Niners also have to start thinking about quarterback Brock Purdy’s likely gigantic contract extension, which unfortunately means some other good players are going to have to go.
All signs point to Aiyuk being shipped out of town, so the league will be keeping an eye on the situation as training camp moves along.
