The Los Angeles Lakers made some big moves last season, and while they didn’t bring in a superstar, the role players they acquired wound up having a major impact.
A big part of roster building is making sure the pieces you have fit well together, both on the court and personality-wise.
That’s one of the reasons why this Lakers team had the second-best record in the league after the trade deadline, as it was evident that they were having fun together.
The months have gone by and that hasn’t changed the slightest.
In a recent interview for Spectrum SportsNets, Lakers guard D’Angelo Russell raved about the vibe in the locker room, stating that they have very positive energy towards each other and that’s made it a lot of fun to play together.
“The group that we got has been fun. A lot of good guys out there that I have fun playing with and just enjoying watching them do well, and when it comes my way I feel the same energy back, so I like where we’re at as a team.” pic.twitter.com/vW0E14btdu

Notably, Russell isn’t a lock to start for Darvin Ham, or at least not for the entire season.
The second-year coach has made some experiments and tweaks with his lineups ahead of the upcoming campaign, and Gabe Vincent poses a real threat to take plenty of minutes from him.
Vincent is a much better defender and plays within his role, while Russell is more of a streaky player, and he’s coming off some struggles in the playoffs.
Whatever the case, this Lakers team is deeper than last year’s, and having a full offseason to develop rapport on the court could also be key to their success.
At the end of the day, Anthony Davis and LeBron James cannot win on their own, and they’ll need everybody to chip in.
