The National Football League has come a long way since its early days.

The game has become slightly less physical and significantly more oriented towards passing.

For better or worse, this is a quarterback’s league now, and as such, other positions have also had to adapt and reinvent themselves to stay relevant.

Perhaps the most notorious evolution has come at the tight end position, as they’re now more and more involved as actual pass-catchers.

In a recent appearance on Maxx Crosby’s The Rush Podcast, former Las Vegas Raiders TE Darren Waller shared his thoughts on the position and how much it has changed over the years.

He claimed that tight ends used to be just like another tackle at the end of the line of scrimmage, whereas they’ve now become legitimate threats in the passing game as well.

He also pointed out Jimmy Graham as one of the guys who paved the way for the modern tight end when he was dominating with the New Orleans Saints.

Waller was one of the best pass catchers at the position during his prime.

Unfortunately, injuries and off-field issues stood in the way towards the end of his career, but he could’ve been a major factor for the New York Giants.

Now, Brock Bowers could join a list of elite pass-catching TEs like George Kittle, Travis Kelce, or Mark Andrews, and we’ll continue to watch more and more players make a big splash at the position in the years to come.
