All eyes were on the Denver Broncos in their preseason opener.

Bo Nix drew mixed reviews during his days in college, and while the athleticism and talent were most definitely there, the decision-making and consistency weren’t.

That’s why even David Carr wasn’t so high on the Oregon product when he first entered the league.

He also didn’t know whether Sean Payton was the right coach for him, as he’s an old-school guy who doesn’t run a lot of RPOs, which seems to be Nix’s biggest strength.

Nevertheless, it seems like he was mistaken.

Talking on the NFL Network, the former quarterback claimed to be very impressed with the way Nix performed in his preseason opener.

While he stated that he still looked a little hesitant when it came to deep passes, he believes that’s just a matter of timing and experience.

As for the way he performed, he liked the fact that Payton actually implemented plenty of RPOs and allowed him to deploy his game in a way he’s actually more efficient.

Carr called Payton one of the five greatest play-callers in NFL history, and he thinks that if he implements an RPO-friendly offense, Nix could be in a position to succeed.

The Broncos have a somewhat mediocre quarterback room behind Nix, with Jarrett Stidham and Zach Wilson also competing for the job.

But if the first game of the preseason is an indicator of things to come, giving Nix the starting nod should be an easy decision for Coach Payton.
