There’s never any certainty when it comes to the NBA Draft.
You never know how a player’s career will turn out, and there are just so many factors that could come into play.
A system, being in the right place, a coach, work ethic, health, and even luck could make or break a young player’s career.
That’s why, oftentimes, fans laugh or cry when looking back at the first round of the NBA Draft and getting a glimpse of the players taken early.
That’s the case with the class of 2009, as most fans just can’t believe that Stephen Curry fell all the way to No. 7.
More than that, the fact that the Minnesota Timberwolves used back-to-back picks on point guards and passed on Curry was hard to explain, to say the least.
Until this day.
Recently, Steph’s father, Dell, revealed that he actually urged the Timberwolves not to get his son (via NBC Sports Bay Area)
Apparently, he talked to JB Bickerstaff on the phone and told him that he didn’t want him there.
“I got a call from Minnesota [Timberwolves] as well, asking about drafting [Steph],” Dell said. “I told them, ‘Please don’t. Please don’t.’ It was [ex-Timberwolves assistant coach] J. B. Bickerstaff. They said, ‘OK, we won’t.’
Dell wanted Steph to go to the New York Knicks, who were slated to pick No. 8.
He even told Donnie Nelson not to take Steph at No. 7, but, fortunately for the Golden State Warriors, the former coach and GM didn’t care about his advice.
The Knicks wound up taking Jordan Hill with the following selection, and the rest, as you may know by now, is history.
