A couple of days ago, Houston Texans legend J.J. Watt made the rounds in NFL circles.
The former Defensive Player of the Year admitted that he had reached out to HC DeMeco Ryans about potentially coming back last season, adding that the offer was still on the table for this campaign.
Watt claimed that he’s still training and taking the same care of his body, but he also stated that he wouldn’t do that forever and that this would probably be the final year that he’d consider coming back.
With that in mind, it seems like Ryans would welcome him with open arms, as he recently hinted at potentially picking up the phone and reaching out to him for a comeback (via Around The NFL):
“I love to hear J.J. saying he’s ready,” Ryans said on Monday, via Sean Pendergast of SportsRadio 610. “I’ve got his number ready to go just in case we need him. … I may need to make that call, so I’m happy that it’s open from him.”

Watt stated that he would only come back if he felt like the team needed him, adding that he hoped that wouldn’t be the case and that everybody stayed healthy.
Notably, this speaks volumes not only about his love for the Texans but also about the faith he had in his former teammate as a coach, as he offered his services before the Texans became the biggest surprise and most improved team in the league.
The Texans should be one of the dark horses to come out of the AFC next season.
Despite the injuries, Watt is perhaps the greatest player in franchise history, and it would be heartwarming to see him in the trenches again, even if it’s just for a couple of games.
