The New Orleans Saints had plenty of hope in Derek Carr in the offseason.
He was supposed to be a significant upgrade over both Andy Dalton and Jameis Winston, at least on paper.
However, the former Las Vegas Raiders star has been fairly erratic this season, and it seemed like he was even starting to lose his locker room after Michael Thomas’ posts on social media.
Nonetheless, it now seems like Carr has been going through a lot this season.
Apparently, he’s suffered three fractured ribs and has been playing through them, adding that no one even knew that he had two broken ribs until he told the media (via Dov Kleiman).
Update: #Saints QB Derek Carr tells media that he suffered 3 different rib fractures this year, two of which that nobody even knew about until he told reporters.
“The other two, no one even knew I played through them.”

This is admirable and should change the narrative around him, but one can only wonder whether the Saints would be better by just shutting him down and rolling with Winston at this point.
Of course, we already know what Winston can bring to the table, and he’s been a roller coaster when given an opportunity to play this season, just like he’s been throughout the course of his entire career.
Then again, it’s not fair to keep throwing Carr into the fire if he’s not healthy enough to play, and that’s only hurting the narrative around him.
It’s never easy to adapt to a new team, a new city, a new offense, and a new playbook, and most QBs fare better after one year.
Add major injuries to that, and there’s no wonder why Carr has been so disappointing this season.
