When the San Diego Padres gave up their entire farm system to the Washington Nationals last year in order to acquire star outfielder Juan Soto, they did it with the thought of having him for three postseason runs in mind.
Indeed, the first one of those was last year and was largely successful: the Padres reached the National League Championship Series.
Many people in the baseball world thought they would be even better this year, because they added Xander Bogaerts and Fernando Tatis Jr. (he returned from his suspension) to their already strong core, one that included Soto, of course.
However, things have gone south this year and the Padres are fourth in the NL West with a 43-47 record.
The rest of July will be crucial for the Padres as the remaining games of the month will probably shape their deadline approach.
If they decide to sell – which is unlikely, but not impossible – they could replenish their farm system by trading Soto.
If that’s the case, the New York Yankees should be eager to pounce, according to one of their legends.
“‘If [the Padres] don’t have a good next couple of weeks, I wouldn’t mind seeing the Yankees go out and get Juan Soto.’ – @derekjeter,” FOX Sports: MLB tweeted.

That would be one of the most shocking trades of 2023.
The Yankees badly need outfield help, and Soto and his .898 OPS would fit in like a glove.
However, they would need to give up their most prized prospects, potentially including Anthony Volpe, to get a deal done.
One would think the Padres would ask the Yankees for Volpe, Jasson Dominguez, and pitching prospects they don’t want to trade like Drew Thorpe and Chase Hampton.
Everson Pereira and 2022 first-round pick Spencer Jones could also be on the move.
A deal for Soto looks improbable, but we have seen crazier things.
