A narrative has been building in the NFL over the past several seasons.
Teams have started to be very selective with older running backs, often, refusing to give them top-tier contracts when they reach a certain age.
Unlike wide receivers, who seem to have a longer shelf life, running backs have a higher tendency to break down earlier.
While there has been a trend of teams not paying running backs in recent seasons, it’s not stopping players like Derrick Henry.
Henry was recently signed by the Baltimore Ravens on a two-year contract that could be worth up to $20 million.
This not only puts Henry on a contending team, but it could allow Henry, a running back entering his age 30 season, an opportunity to prove his doubters wrong.
Henry talked about this in a recent conversation shared via Jamison Hensley of ESPN, highlighting what this new chance means for him.
“I just focus on me being healthy, doing my job when I’m here, and then let my play speak for my age,” Henry said.
He is a firm believer that his performance will do the talking, and regardless of his age, Henry is laser-focused on staying healthy.
The best ability in the NFL is availability, and if Henry misses any time, it could jeopardize the Ravens’ chances of making it to the Super Bowl.
They are counting on him to solidify their running game, and with Lamar Jackson being a rushing quarterback, having someone to take the pressure off him could make a world of difference.
