The Boston Celtics could look quite different next season.
Marcus Smart is no longer on the team, and with Malcolm Brogdon dealing with an undisclosed ailment, Derrick White emerges as the obvious biggest beneficiary from his departure.
White has earned a bigger role on Joe Mazzulla’s team, and he’s often responded with clutch shots and some nice defensive plays as well.
In a recent interview with Malika Andrews of ESPN, White opened up about being more of a playmaker and getting more involved in the flow of the offense, stating that he’s excited and looking forward to continuing growing with the team.
White also stated that he would love to extend his stay with the Celtics, adding that he loves the city and has really enjoyed his time there.
The Celtics will need all hands on deck next season if they want to get over the hump once and for all.
With Smart and Grant Williams gone, they’ll have to find a new leader in that locker room, and given his experience and how he usually rises to the occasion, White might be the guy they turn to when things get hard.
Of course, most of the offense will run through Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown, and Kristaps Porzingis, but every team is a strong as its weakest link, and White and their rotation players will need to be better in Mazzulla’s second year in charge of the team if they want to put last season’s heartbreaking end in the rearview mirror.
