Following the defeat against the Kansas City Chiefs in the Super Bowl in overtime, the main focus of attention for the San Francisco 49ers has been the contract situation with veteran wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk, who wants an extension before the 2024 campaign gets underway in September.
After two solid seasons to begin his NFL career with the 49ers in 2020 and 2021, Aiyuk has taken his game to another level, following those two years up with even more impressive stats in 2022 and 2023, which gives him a good case to be rewarded with a lucrative contract extension.
In 2022, Aiyuk caught 78 passes for 1,015 receiving yards and eight touchdowns, making him a valuable weapon in the passing game.
Although he caught three fewer passes (75) and one fewer touchdown (7) in 2023, Aiyuk racked up a career-best 1,342 receiving yards, making his case stronger to secure a deal with the 49ers.
According to Mike Silver of the San Francisco Chronicle, the team is offering Aiyuk an average of $26 million per season in this new deal.
“I’m hearing their offer is in the $26 million range, which certainly is not Justin Jefferson money, nor should it be, but it’s closer to that DeVonta Smith, Amon-Ra St. Brown, that next tier down,” Silver said.
That is a pretty sizable payday for a wide receiver who isn’t quite a superstar status but is a valuable asset to the team and a player the team clearly wants to retain on a long-term basis.
It’ll be interesting to see if the two sides can reach a deal or if the 49ers ultimately trade him elsewhere.
