Nothing kills the excitement of training camp getting underway quite like an injury to a key player.
The Indianapolis Colts are dealing with this at the moment after wide receiver Josh Downs went down with an injury in practice, and details have quickly emerged about the severity of his injury and when fans can expect to see him back on the field.
ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler shared on X that Downs suffered a high ankle sprain and the current outlook is that he’ll miss about a month.

Colts safety Nick Cross has taken a lot of heat since he was the one who injured Downs on a tackle, and after practice, he mentioned the injury was unfortunate but said he was just playing football.
#Colts FS Nick Cross, asked about the play in which he injured WR Josh Downs:
“I mean, we’re playing football. We’re competing. Josh is my guy. I love that boy to death. … It’s unfortunate.”

Downs reportedly was having a great camp and developing strong chemistry with fellow second-year player, QB Anthony Richardson.
Downs is a crucial member of the offense after quickly emerging as one of the best rookies in his class last year to put up 68 catches for 771 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
He is being counted on as a go-to target alongside Michael Pittman Jr., so it’s encouraging news that Downs avoided a major injury and could still be in the mix for Week 1.
Richardson’s rookie year was cut short due to a shoulder injury, so he needs all the time he can get with his receivers to develop chemistry ahead of Year 2.
It’s unfortunate he won’t be able to do that with Downs throughout the rest of training camp, but the Colts need him to heal up before the regular season.
