The Los Angeles Clippers and Paul George had more than a year to get a deal done.

Both parties were always far apart in terms of a new deal.

Apparently, George was — and still is — looking to get four years in his next contract, while the Clippers are only willing to offer him three.

With that in mind, the Golden State Warriors tried to swoop in and pair him with Stephen Curry.

According to a report by Tim Kawakami of The Athletic (via Evan Sidery), the Warriors tried to get George to the Bay area, and the interest was mutual.

“Golden State offered some combination of Andrew Wiggins, Chris Paul, Jonathan Kuminga or Moses Moody and a first-round pick,” Kawakami said.

Paul George gave strong indications he wanted to join the Warriors, which included serious trade negotiations with the Clippers through Saturday’s option deadline, per @timkawakami (https://t.co/gvpW9WjRmn).

They tried to trade for him prior to Saturday’s option deadline but to no avail.

Per the report, the Warriors offered a combination of Andrew Wiggins, Chris Paul, Jonathan Kuminga, or Moses Moody and a first-round pick for George’s services.

This comes on the heels of GM Mike Dunleavy Jr. stating that the Warriors wouldn’t force any big moves and that they were definitely not going to trade their young players.

That’s how things go down behind closed doors in the NBA.

Notably, the fact that they were willing to give up Kuminga on any deal was fairly surprising, as he looks poised for a breakout and was the team’s second-best player last season.

The Warriors clearly want to go all-in again, which is why they tried to get LeBron James last season as well.

Still, at this point, a big move like this seems unlikely for Steve Kerr’s team.
