Larry Bird of the Boston Celtics hasn’t played in the NBA in more than 30 years now but people are still debating his career.
Dennis Rodman once said that if Bird were pursuing basketball today, he wouldn’t earn a spot in the NBA but would only be able to play overseas.
Hall of Famer Dominique Wilkins couldn’t disagree more.
Speaking to VladTV, Wilkins pushed back hard against Rodman’s comment.
“Larry Bird could play in any era and do the same thing he did in our era. They couldn’t handle him. Today’s players could not handle him. Period,” Wilkins said.
He then added: “Larry Bird played in the most physical era ever.”
Wilkins said that not only would Bird still dominate in the current NBA but he also was far more physical than some people give him credit for.
He even added that today’s NBA isn’t as physically competitive as it once was, although he doesn’t necessarily blame anyone for that and just says that times have changed.
During his 13 years in the NBA, Bird was easily one of the biggest basketball players in the world.
He averaged 24.3 points and 10 rebounds on 49.6% from the field.
And despite what some people said, he was definitely a very physical star at 6-foot-9.
He was an All-Star 12 times, an NBA champion three times, and has a spot on the NBA 75th Anniversary Team and in the Basketball Hall of Fame.
Like other players from that era, some people say he wouldn’t be able to compete today.
But those who knew him best and played alongside him, like Wilkins, think that idea is completely absurd.
