The Jacksonville Jaguars had some needs on the roster in the offseason that included a backup quarterback and they may have found an answer in Mac Jones.

Jones was previously with the New England Patriots but got traded to Jacksonville in the offseason for a sixth-round pick.

A former first-round pick, Jones showed some flashes in New England but had a rough couple of seasons which led to his departure.

Now with the Jaguars, Jones can rehab his value playing backup behind Trevor Lawrence whom the team just extended.

Head coach Doug Pederson has been pleased with Jones’ performance so far and even took a shot at the Patriots when praising him via Mike Reiss of ESPN.

“Mac has played extremely well in the last couple of weeks and has really bought into what we do,” Jones said. “He’ll still revert back to his Patriots ways every now and then, and we have to remind him he’s in Jacksonville. But he’s done a good job managing and running the offense, getting everybody involved. He sees the field well, throws a good ball, so he’s done a good job.

Pederson seems to be implying that New England didn’t develop Jones properly and that he’s got a better support system in Jacksonville.

It did seem like Jones was set up to fail on a Patriots team that lacked weapons to help out in the passing game which in turn made the quarterback look worse.

Regardless, both parties have moved on and while Jones won’t play much during the 2024 NFL season he’s still one of the better backups to have.
