It is always great for a player when he scores his first NFL touchdown.

This happened for New England Patriots rookie quarterback Drake Maye against the Philadelphia Eagles when he ran in a 4-yard touchdown in their preseason game.

“It was an awesome moment,” Maye said, via NBC Sports Boston. “… Cool to be out there with some of the guys that are in the same spot going through the same thing. … A moment I’ll probably never forget.”

The No. 3 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft has performed well this preseason.

In two games, he is 8-for-14 passing for 66 yards and his rushing touchdown.

His preseason passer rating of 69.3 is far better than veteran teammate Jacoby Brissett’s, whose rating is an embarrassing 0.0 while competing for the starting job.

The young signal-caller is starting to make some strides as the NFL plays the middle of the preseason.

It is also nice for Maye that there aren’t huge expectations for him and the rest of the Patriots this season.

So, all he has to worry about is focusing on getting better each and every day by taking one play at a time.

With Maye and first-year head coach Jerod Mayo seemingly operating with house money on their side, perhaps they could surprise some people this season.

Time will tell whether or not Maye is named the starter for Week 1 of the regular season at the Cincinnati Bengals.
