New England Patriots rookie quarterback Drake Maye was able to finally take the field in a live-game situation when the team faced the Carolina Panthers at home in their first preseason game last night.

The former North Carolina Tar Heel oddly played just one series completing two passes for 19 yards.

In his postgame press conference, he shared his thoughts on his first opportunity to play in an NFL game.

“I think it was awesome…Being there with fans is a different feeling…I thought the guys did a great job…For me, I kind of had an idea of how much I’d play the night and just go in there and try to take care of the football and execute,” Maye told the New England media.

The No. 3 overall pick appears to be ready to do whatever head coach Jerod Mayo and Co. ask of him.

If they wanted him to play the entire night, perhaps he could have.

Still, it was a bit of a shock to see Maye play just one drive in his first game in the NFL.

Perhaps Mayo wanted to keep him safe from possible injury or even just pace him as he continues to get his feet wet in the league.

But whether it is the veteran in Brissett, who has been a predominant backup throughout his career, or the first-year player in Maye, wouldn’t you want to try to get them a few more reps to feel more comfortable in the offense before they start the regular season?

Regardless, it feels as though Maye is comfortable with where he is at and content with the progress he has made so far as a rookie.
