Every NFL quarterback had a long road to get to this lofty position, and the fortunate ones had the strong backing of a solid family behind them.

That is the case with New England Patriots rookie Drake Maye, the first round draft choice who is counted on to eventually lead the team back to the promised land.

But before he ever plays a down in Foxboro, the North Carolina product knows that he has a well-established fan club back home.

Mike Reiss revealed for Patriots fans that Maye wears a “MayeWay” band on his left wrist as a tribute to his family.

The quarterback said the band is “a constant reminder – family first…Those are three of my best friends, my older brothers.”

The third overall pick has been impressive during his first month with the proud franchise.

Offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt told Reiss that “he’s come out, he’s taken everything from the classroom, everything from our individual periods, and he’s applied them to the team drills.”

Van Pelt credited Maye with a smooth transition to calling plays from the huddle and directing the offense with rhythm.

Despite his strides toward the starter’s role, the plan in New England is to have him ease into the position behind the experienced Jacoby Brissett.

But with the high draft selection, a strong arm and the weight of the expectations of the organization on his shoulders, it is unquestioned that the job will be Maye’s before long.

And he will take the reins with the strong support of his proud family.
