Over the past couple of weeks, rookie quarterbacks Caleb Williams of the Chicago Bears, Jayden Daniels of the Washington Commanders and Bo Nix of the Denver Broncos have all been named the starter for their respective teams heading toward Week 1 of the regular season.
Three other quarterbacks who were taken in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft were trying to earn a starting job, but Michael Penix Jr. will back up veteran Kirk Cousins to start his career with the Atlanta Falcons, and J.J. McCarthy of the Minnesota Vikings has been ruled out for the season after knee surgery.
That leaves Drake Maye of the New England Patriots, who is still battling it out with veteran Jacoby Brissett for the starting job, which doesn’t seem to be going in his favor.
Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo, the successor to Bill Belichick, has yet to name his starter for Week 1, leaving Maye in limbo.
The No. 3 overall pick was recently asked if he believes Brissett is the starter right now, and it seems as though he doesn’t know.
“I’m not 100 percent sure,” Maye said, via Savage Sports.

This comment from Maye doesn’t instill a lot of confidence that he’s won the job in New England, and perhaps that might be for the best, as the team’s offensive line is shaky and might make him more likely to get injured than develop like the Patriots would like him to.
However, anything can happen from here on out, as there’s still time for him to win the job and be named the starter before the Pats take on the Cincinnati Bengals to open the regular season.
