It’s been a tough couple of weeks for the Golden State Warriors.

First, they lost to the Los Angeles Lakers in the NBA playoffs.

Then, Bob Myers announced he wasn’t coming back as GM.

And now, Draymond Green has decided to opt out of the final year of his contract worth $27.5 million, according to Shams Charania.

Golden State Warriors four-time NBA champion Draymond Green is declining his $27.5 million player option for 2023-24 season and will enter unrestricted free agency, Klutch Sports CEO Rich Paul told @TheAthletic @Stadium.

Notably, though, this was heavily expected.

Green made it loud and clear that he wanted to get a max contract extension, which seemed unlikely given the Dubs’ current financial status.

Then again, opting out and becoming an unrestricted free agent doesn’t necessarily mean he’s going to leave the Bay Area.

He should gauge plenty of league-wide interest, but he could also look to sign a multi-year deal worth less money per year but more money in total with the Warriors, as many veterans have done.

It wouldn’t be the first time that Green takes a team-friendly deal and gives them a discount just to stay with the Splash Brothers, and he’s made it clear that he wants to run it back and win another championship with Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson.

Then again, it would all depend on how far the Warriors are willing to go to try and keep him.

The new CBA makes it tough for teams to build when they have multiple guys making top-dollar.

And even though Green has earned his stripes and every single penny with the Warriors, they might not be interested in keeping him on a long-term, big-money kind of deal.
