Eagles Are Reportedly Getting Trade Calls For DE

The Philadelphia Eagles defense took a step back in 2023 following a strong run to the Super Bowl in the previous year.

Philly gave up 25.2 points per game, third-worst in the NFL, and posted just 18 takeaways and 43 sacks, which was a far cry from the 70 sacks it put up in 2022.

That defense might be shaken up even more, as NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero is reporting that the Eagles are fielding trade calls on defensive end Josh Sweat.

The #Eagles are having trade calls on DE Josh Sweat, sources tell me and @RapSheet.

The Eagles are starting over with a completely new defensive coaching staff this coming year, which often means it is time to clean house.

Sweat is still just 26 and has posted 35 sacks in his first six years in the NFL, all spent with the Eagles.

Any team trading for Sweat would be taking on a $9 million cap hit in 2024, the final year of the 3-year, $40 million extension he signed in 2021.

Sweat has played at least 16 games in four of the last five years and will be motivated to cash in on a contract year.

The wording used in this report is interesting, as Pelissero said the Eagles are “having” trade calls, which feels intentionally vague.

When trade rumors come out, it’s important to note whether the calls are reportedly being initiated by the current team or whether the current team is receiving calls from other teams.

If a report says the team is making calls, it is often a tactic used to increase trade value and generate interest.

Simply “having” calls doesn’t tell us much, so keep an eye out for how this situation unfolds, as it is still unclear how motivated the Eagles are to move Sweat.
