New York Mets closer Edwin Díaz, as you probably remember if you watched the World Baseball Classic, suffered a full thickness tear of the patellar tendon in his right knee during the tournament.
It happened while celebrating a key victory with Team Puerto Rico.
He went under the knife last month and was given an eight-month timetable.
That would, most likely, rule him out for the entire season.
The pitcher, however, is not ready to give up on that dream yet.
“Speaking for the first time since injuring his knee in March, Edwin Díaz offers hope that he can pitch this season,” Mets insider Anthony DiComo tweeted.

While the most likely scenario is still that he misses the entire year (including the playoffs) and he returns in 2024, the pitcher says that his knee has been responding well since surgery.
Diaz is hoping to resume throwing at some point during the season if his rehab goes well enough, and so far, it has all been smooth sailing.
It’s not unheard of that players beat the eight-month recovery timeline and return in six months.
That hypothetical scenario would put him in play to be ready by late September or early October.
The Mets are definitely not going to rush him if they don’t deem him healthy enough to pitch, but what if he is?
If that’s indeed the case, the Mets could potentially have their closer back for the final few days of the season and the entire postseason, should they make it that far.
That’s what the hurler is aiming for.
Will he have enough time to beat the odds?
