The New England Patriots had the worst collection of wide receivers in the NFL last season, so upgrading the unit was a big priority this season as evidenced by the use of a pair of high draft picks on Ja’Lynn Polk and Javon Baker.

There were plenty of reports that the Pats weren’t done, as their name was brought up plenty of times when discussing the ongoing Brandon Aiyuk contract dispute/trade request with the San Francisco 49ers as a potential trade destination, but general manager Eliot Wolf recently announced that the team had made a final decision on that front.

Wolf spoke with the media during a training camp press conference recently and said “Yes, at this point” when asked if the team had fully closed the door on an Aiyuk trade before adding that the good week the team saw from its young receivers helped factor into their decision to move on from trade discussions.

Aiyuk certainly would have given the team the No. 1 option it desperately needs, but the Pats are opting to continue playing the long game as they go through the rebuilding process.

That philosophy was evident earlier in the week when the team also decided to trade its best defender to the Atlanta Falcons, as Matthew Judon was sent south for a third-round pick in return.

Kendrick Bourne, DeMario Douglas, and Polk currently sit atop the depth chart as the top three options, and the team is clearly hoping that Polk and Davis can emerge as legitimate threats to make the Aiyuk decision easier to stomach.
