After decades of success and winning under former head coach Bill Belichick, the New England Patriots are entering a new era.

New head coach Jerod Mayo will be tasked with rebuilding the Patriots back up into title contenders, though this will be a multi-year project as the roster isn’t nearly as strong as it used to be.

The golden days of New England football featured Tom Brady and Belichick, but the pairing had a lot of help along the way.

One of the most iconic players in Patriots history is Rob Gronkowski who the team took in the second round of the 2010 NFL Draft.

Gronkowski quickly established himself as one of the best tight ends in the league because of his size, speed and physicality.

Former New England coach Ernie Adams revealed what separated Gronkowski from his peers during his peak.

“The thing that distinguishes Rob is he can block like a tackle and catch like a big receiver,” Adams said. “There are other guys who you play at tight end who’d be a little better route runners, little more receiving tight ends but none of them could block the way that Rob would.”

Gronkowski became well-known for his ability to make plays with the football, but he was also one of the best blocking tight ends in the NFL.

As Adams mentioned, Gronkowski could line up just about everywhere and wreak havoc but he was also a large part of their run game and pass protection sets.

Gronkowski was truly a special talent and one that people like Adams certainly appreciate.
