Head coach Kyle Shanahan can’t seem to escape misfortune in the playoffs as he and the San Francisco 49ers lost a heartbreak to the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LVIII.
The 49ers took a 10-point lead in the first half of the championship game, but faded away as the Chiefs were able to take advantage of miscues.
Kansas City wound up becoming the first team to repeat as Super Bowl champions in decades, while San Francisco must now figure out how to get over the playoff hump.
Shanahan decided to part ways with respected defensive coordinator Steve Wilks after the loss.
With an opening on Shanahan’s staff suddenly available, there’s a contingent of league personnel that believe former Los Angeles Chargers head coach Brandon Staley will be tapped for the job via ProFootballTalk.
“People around the league think the #49ers will end up making former #Chargers HC Brandon Staley their next defensive coordinator.”

Staley was fired in the middle of the 2023 NFL season after the Chargers allowed the Las Vegas Raiders to drop 63 points on them.
Staley earned a reputation as a defensive genius after leading the Los Angeles Rams to the NFL’s No. 1 ranked defense in his first year there, but he failed to live up to expectations with the Chargers.
However, a return to a coordinator role in San Francisco seems like a smart career move for Staley who will likely do better without as many responsibilities.
A deal isn’t imminent, though Staley does make a lot of sense for the 49ers.
