The Pittsburgh Steelers have finally named their starting quarterback for Week 1.
Nine-time Pro Bowler and former Super Bowl champion Russell Wilson will be the team’s starter when they kick off the season in Atlanta on September 8th.
“Coach Tomlin has named Russell Wilson as the starting quarterback,” the Steelers announced on social media.

It is safe to say that Steelers fans on social media felt like this might happen.

If you say you want Fields as the starter you don’t know ball.

No surprise… but Fields would have been a better choice.

This decision from head coach Mike Tomlin was a predictable one, even though Wilson and former first-round pick Justin Fields were in a quarterback battle.
Tomlin made the choice to go with a possible future Hall of Famer in Wilson because of what he showed in practice and in his preseason work.
This preseason, the former Seattle Seahawk went 10 of 12 passing for 73 yards and had a passer rating of 92.0.
While Fields showed some promise after coming over from the Bears, the Steelers feel like he is best suited to be their backup behind Wilson for the time being.
With an elite defense, led by former Defensive Player of the Year T.J. Watt, this Steelers team might just need competent quarterback play to make them more than playoff contenders.
If Wilson can rediscover some of the magic that he had in Seattle for a decade, the Steelers might be a better team than most might think.
If Wilson is unsuccessful, Fields is the option that Tomlin can go to if need be.
