Two years ago, the Dallas Cowboys cut ties with Ezekiel Elliott.
They moved on from him as soon as the guaranteed money on his then-record-breaking contract ran out, and while they acknowledged they wanted to keep him, they also claimed they didn’t want to insult him with a low-ball offer.
Elliott struggled to find a new home, signing with the New England Patriots shortly before the start of training camp.
He had a somewhat decent year there, and he’s now right back where it all started, in Arlington.
Needless to say, if the Cowboys didn’t see him as a featured back two years ago, chances are things haven’t changed all that much with one more year under his belt.
That’s why he admits that as much as he still sees himself as a starting-caliber back in this league, he’s more than likely to be a part of a committee.
Talking to the media, Elliott claimed that the most important part of his role was to stay healthy and fresh for when it mattered the most (via Jon Machota).
Ezekiel Elliott: “I still view myself as a starter in this league. But also, I got to take care of my body and make sure that I’m fresh for when it matters. What that’s going to look like, I’m not necessarily sure, but we’ll figure that out.”

He also admitted that he didn’t know how their running back by committee would work, but he seemed sold on whatever he had to do to help his team.
Elliott should be at the top of their depth chart, with Rico Dowdle, Deuce Vaughn, and Royce Freeman behind him.
That’s not the most impressive RB room in the game by any means, and that’s a major concern for a team that has found more success establishing the run than putting the ball in Dak Prescott’s hands.
