One of MLB’s longest-tenured umpires, Angel Hernandez, is set to retire from active duty.
He also happens to be one of the most controversial officials in recent MLB history, with a long track record of missed calls and baffling decisions.
Fans had been clamoring for this day for a long time.
Hernandez is one of the reasons why fans have been calling for the implementation of robo umpires.

Hernandez has been a dividing figure among players and fans for years.
He has drawn the ire of many players over the years for his outrageous calls.
However, it’s fair to say he got to stay in the best league in the world for more than three decades.
Per USA Today Sports, he and the league have been negotiating a financial settlement for a couple of weeks before they reached a resolution over the weekend, which is when the announcement was made.
“Starting with my first major league game in 1991, I have had the very good experience of living out my childhood dream of umpiring in the major leagues. I treasured the camaraderie of my colleagues and the friendships I have made along the way. I have decided that I want to spend more time with my family,” he told the publication.
If anything, Hernandez will enjoy the peace and being out of the spotlight, which is always a positive.
