The New York Yankees started their season with a bang.
They opened the season at home taking on the San Francisco Giants.
New York won the game, 5-0, and starter Gerrit Cole was one reason for the shutout.
Cole is one of the best pitchers in baseball and is a favorite to win AL Cy Young.
His Opening Day start was as advertised.
Cole set a Yankees record for most strikeouts on Opening Day with 11.
He also threw six shutout innings.

If the Yankees hope to make a run at the World Series this year, they will need Cole to stay healthy.
They already have suffered a few injuries to their starting rotation, and can not afford to lose Cole.
Some Yankees fans think this could be the year Cole wins his first Cy Young award.

Last season, Cole led the American League in games started (33) and strikeouts (257).
He has been durable throughout his career and is expected to be a workhorse for the Yankees this year.
The new pitch clock did not affect Cole in his first game.

This performance by Cole was elite, and you can expect many more games like that this season.
One spot where Cole struggled last year was giving up home runs.
He gave up 33, and that led the AL.
Wow what a season debut

If he can limit the home runs allowed in 2023, he should win some hardware at the season’s end.
