The Seattle Mariners are slowly but surely creeping up on the Toronto Blue Jays for the third and final Wild Card spot in the American League.
The Mariners took a big step on Tuesday night thanks to a dominant start by Logan Gilbert.
The young right-hander struck out 12 batters over seven shutout innings and also did not allow a walk.
It was a career-high for Gilbert, but he also tied a historic Mariners mark in the process.
It was the most strikeouts for a pitcher in a start where he allowed one hit or fewer and no walks, a record which was previously set on August 15, 2012, when Felix Hernandez threw his perfect game.
Sarah Langs of MLB.com noted this on Twitter.
most strikeouts with 0 walks & 1 or 0 hits allowed, Mariners history:
Today Logan Gilbert: 12
8/15/12 Félix Hernández: 12 in his perfect game
they’re the only ones on the list to do it with 10 or more K https://t.co/EMbp4zdDFo

Gilbert was certainly on point on Tuesday as he dominated against the San Diego Padres.
All he allowed was one hit over his seven innings of work.
The young right-hander earned his 10th win of the season and lowered his ERA to 3.66.
Fans reacted to Gilbert’s dominant start on Twitter.
One expressed relief over the fact that Gilbert was not traded away at the deadline, as he was discussed.
Let me just say…

This is some important Mariners history that Gilbert has become a part of, as he joins a franchise legend and icon in Hernandez.
11 years have passed since Hernandez’s perfect game, but Gilbert gave Mariners fans a nice flashback to one of their all-time favorites with a spectacular outing against the Padres.
