Massive news recently hit the NFL wire as Minnesota Vikings rookie quarterback J.J. McCarthy is reportedly now out for the season with a torn meniscus.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, McCarthy needed to have his meniscus repaired after injuring it in Minnesota’s preseason win over the Las Vegas Raiders.

“Surgery on J.J. McCarthy’s torn meniscus revealed that a repair was necessary and the Vikings rookie quarterback now will miss the 2024 season,” Schefter recently posted on social media.

Schefter also noted that the Vikings “believe he will come back better and have a long, successful NFL career.”

This is a tough way to start a career for McCarthy.

The former national champion and first-round pick will now have to spend most or all of the season recovering and rehabbing, which could slow his growth.

For Minnesota, they do have some insurance in the form of veteran Sam Darnold, who likely would have been the starter anyway.

Now, he will be the full-time starter for 2024.

The 27-year-old is entering his seventh career season and has 56 career starts across his time with the New York Jets, Carolina Panthers, and San Francisco 49ers.

His best career season came in 2019 when he went 7-6 as the starter for the Jets and set career highs in completion percentage (61.9%), passing yards (3,024), and passing touchdowns (19).

Minnesota has some quality weapons around Darnold in All-Pro wide receiver Justin Jefferson, Pro Bowl tight end T.J. Hockenson, former Pro Bowl running back Aaron Jones, and second-year standout wide receiver Jordan Addison.

The injury to McCarthy is a brutal one, but the veteran in Darnold could end up being the right option for 2024.
