Ever since it became public that Craig Counsell might consider switching teams and managing a team other than the Milwaukee Brewers, teams started to line up for his services.
After all, he took a lousy Brewers team in 2015 and turned it into a perennial contender in the NL Central with work, discipline, and patience.
From 2015 to 2023, Counsell compiled a 707-625 record with a .531 winning percentage, including five postseason berths since 2018.
You can imagine that the news of Counsell joining the Chicago Cubs, the Brewers’ primary foe in the NL Central, turned the baseball world upside down.
This is especially true given the circumstances: the Cubs already had David Ross as manager, so they basically told him: “we are going to go with a rival manager over you.”
In addition to that, nobody had the Cubs as a candidate, so they must have blown Counsell away and that’s impressive given that the New York Mets and their unlimited pockets were after his services.
“The Chicago Cubs are hiring Craig Counsell as their manager, sources tell ESPN. A blockbuster move for Chicago, which had David Ross as their manager but will now go with Counsell, who had spent the previous decade with their division rival Milwaukee. @Ken_Rosenthal was on it,” MLB insider Jeff Passan tweeted.

Last but not least, some people were willing to acknowledge everything Counsell achieved with Milwaukee.
Counsell was the unquestioned leader of this clubhouse. a guy who not only played in Milwaukee, but raised his family there, and cared about the. Immunity and taking a small Midwestern non-contending ballclub into a legit playoff team, all with a fraction of other team’s payrolls

Now, Counsell will start a new chapter with the Cubs and Ross’ future remains in question.
